Het gebied is laaggelegen (&lt; 400 m) maar heeft steile hellingen. Het gebied heeft een lange geschiedenis van mijnbouw sinds de Romeinse tijd, maar in de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw werd de impact van de mijnbouwactiviteiten intenser. Tussen de jaren 1950 en 1991, toen de activiteiten stopten, werden enorme hoeveelheden metalen ertsen verwerkt, wat leidde tot de productie van duizenden miljoenen tonnen mijnafval. De meeste van deze afvalstoffen werden verlaten met het einde van de mijnbouwactiviteit.
