Together with the International Soil Modelling Consortium we are pleased to announce the launch of a new working group dedicated to advancing pollutant transport and fate modelling in soils. This group brings together experts and practitioners interested in understanding how contaminants move through soil systems, how they transform over time, and how these processes affect the functions and ecosystem services that soils provide.

The working group will meet regularly to monitor progress, share expertise and highlight key developments as part of ongoing efforts to improve and integrate soil pollution assessment models. The pollutants under study pose significant risks to the environment and human health in Europe and beyond, making it essential to establish robust modelling frameworks.

The group will explore a broad range of modelling approaches, including:

• Modelling pollutant transport in soils
• Modelling groundwater transport and coupled soil-groundwater transport
• Modelling pollutant movement through water and wind erosion
• New approaches focusing on PFAS uptake by plant root systems, a rapidly growing area of research.

By fostering collaboration across disciplines and projects, this working group aims to strengthen the scientific basis for evaluating the impacts of soil contamination and to support evidence-based soil management and policy.
