At the 28th Salt Water Intrusion Meeting (SWIM28), held in June 2–6, 2025, in Barcelona and hosted by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, our partner Adam Szymkiewicz from the Gdańsk University of Technology presented our work on the Puck Bay use case.
The presentation focused on building an integrated modeling platform for coastal aquifers—systems where land-based freshwater meets seawater. We highlighted the need to couple surface water and groundwater models to better understand discharge dynamics and water quality. Using Puck Bay on the Polish Baltic coast as an example, the team study how farming and land use affect groundwater recharge, submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), and the movement of nitrate pollution into the sea.
The session was also a great chance to share ideas and experiences with other researchers developing similar tools in different regions, leading to valuable discussions on methods, challenges, and possibilities for future collaboration.
