El \u00e1rea es baja (&lt; 400 m) pero con pendientes pronunciadas. El territorio tiene una larga historia de explotaci\u00f3n minera desde la \u00e9poca romana, pero fue durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX cuando los impactos de la actividad minera se volvieron m\u00e1s intensos. Entre los a\u00f1os 50 y 1991, cuando ces\u00f3 la actividad, se procesaron enormes cantidades de minerales met\u00e1licos, lo que llev\u00f3 a la producci\u00f3n de miles de millones de toneladas de residuos mineros. La mayor\u00eda de estos residuos fueron abandonados con el final de la actividad minera.
