Das Gebiet ist niedrig gelegen (&lt; 400 m), hat aber steile H\u00e4nge. Das Gebiet blickt auf eine lange Geschichte des Bergbaus seit der R\u00f6merzeit zur\u00fcck, aber erst in der zweiten H\u00e4lfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden die Auswirkungen des Bergbaus intensiver. Zwischen den 1950er Jahren und 1991, als der Bergbau eingestellt wurde, wurden riesige Mengen an Metallerzen verarbeitet, was zur Produktion von Millionen Tonnen Bergbauabf\u00e4llen f\u00fchrte. Die meisten dieser Abf\u00e4lle wurden mit dem Ende der Bergbaut\u00e4tigkeit entsorgt.
